Thursday, May 17 (9:30 pm – One Set) & Thursday, May 24 (9:30 pm – One Set)

Come and join world-class live jazz with musicians who have played with the likes of Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock, Robben Ford, Al Jarreau and Wayne Shorter in an intimate setting at the bang lounge!

Wolfgang Schalk Quartet
Celebrating the release of his new album “Word Of Ear”
Cover charge: $ 8
Free wine & snacks!

Wolfgang Schalk – guitar
Otmaro Ruiz – piano
Michael Valerio – bass
Zach Harmon – drums (5/3, 5/10, 10/24)
Tom Brechtlein – drums (5/17)

Using his keen talent for musical invention, Wolfgang Schalk has garnered international acclaim as a gifted guitarist and composer. Recalling the sounds of esteemed fret-board masters Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Pat Martino and Pat Metheny, Schalk expands on the tradition by playing dynamic music expressing thoughtfulness and original artistic abilities as one of today’s authentic jazz guitarists. Wolfgang Schalk’s new release Word of Ear further showcases his talent as a consummate guitarist, playing with deep soulfulness and feeling. With the follow up to his critically acclaimed release “Wanted” (Frame Up Music 2008) the bi-coastal (NY/LA) jazz guitarist presents new music with an exciting band. Yet, in contrast to the familiar term “word of mouth”, it is the music that speaks with its unique yet familiar language. This embodies the essence of Word of Ear as Schalk reaffirms that “jazz is one of the deepest art-forms”. These concepts are fully realized within the recording’s nine tracks.

“…one of the best jazz guitarists on the US scene…Heartily recommended, and I’ve been playing jazz on the radio for 30 years.” – John Motavalli (WPKN Radio, CT)

“world class in every sense of the term…” – Just Jazz Guitar
“an explosively inventive guitarist and a gifted, challenging composer…Highly recommended.” – All About Jazz

“…that recall the flexibility of the 1960s Miles Davis Quintet.” – Jazz Times
“Schalk lists a pair of Pats – Martino and Metheny – as influences. And both of those disparate styles surface from time to time in his intriguing work.” – Los Angeles Times

This class is for continuing students from Level Two and for anyone who knows the basics of improv and character work wants to take the next step: scenes!

Six weeks. Starts April 11th. Meets every Wednesday 7:30pm-10pm. $225.

Ed Goodman started of as an undergrad humor columnist at Duke University. After graduation, Ed moved to Kansas City and became an improviser, working for (the now defunct) Kansas City ComedySportz. Ed then moved to Chicago where he worked his way up the Second City ladder. Eventually, Ed was chosen to join the main stage cast in Las Vegas, Nevada, doing ten shows a week on the strip. When the show closed, Ed moved to Los Angeles where he attended the UCLA Professional Program and was encouraged to apply for the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. He got in on his first try. Ed quickly found that his extensive improv background served him well in writing both full length comedy features as well as sit-com specs and pilots. After winning The UCLA Showcase twice (once for a feature, once for an original pilot), Ed graduated with an MFA in screenwriting. These days Ed spends his time writing, teaching, and learning to make dumb noises on his guitar.

The ‘pitch’ is a crucial element to selling any project, even if you’ve already written and/or produced it. You’re going to have to pitch your idea to producers, directors, executives and, hopefully, marketing executives and the media.

This workshop will give participants an understanding of the role of the pitch in the entertainment industry, teach the fundamentals of pitching and help them develop a pitch for their own original project.

Workshop takes place on Saturday April 7th 3-6pm. $75 for the session.

You can register for the workshop here: http://www.uncabaret.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=125&zenid=9ff91ddd09e5ccfb725126d9b091bb13

This session will cover:

1. Defining Your Project: Log lines, genres and other key components that define a project. Includes different styles and approaches to staging & delivering a pitch. Students will practice the fundamentals by pitching movies that have already been made.

2. Storylines: Tools for condensing storylines, how to make a story concrete without getting lost in the details, how to represent ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ stories in your pitch and ways to frame your original story for maximum comedy/drama.

3. Characters: Who’s story is this anyway? How to define characters, primary relationships and chart your character hierarchy in a pitch that makes your characters come alive.

4. Here Comes The Pitch: What is your story really about? Finding the core theme of your project, an angle of entry, framing the pitch and bringing all the elements together for an engaging compelling presentation of your original project.

Greg has pitched and sold projects to Comedy Central, MTV, 20th Century Fox, Oxygen, Disney, Dino DeLaurentiis, Comedy World Radio, the Recovery Network and others.
